FESTIVAL SCHEDULE

Participants of the Hawai'i Shakuhachi Festival 2006 (HSF06) will be able to attend twelve workshops over three days.

Four workshops, called "Group Sessions", will involve the entire Festival, during which a topic or piece pertinent to everyone will be discussed or taught. The piece, Tamuke will be the subject of one "group session". In others, participants will learn about techniques such as meri-kari, how to relax while playing the shakuhachi, suizen blowing/listening and how to practice effectively.

During the remaining eight workshop session times, participants will be able to choose from as many as four workshops running concurrently, each dealing with a different piece or topic. Many of these sessions will be repeated, giving participants the opportunity to attend workshops that might conflict with other workshops of interest.

NEW!! SHINOBUE WORKSHOPS.
Riley will be teaching four special Shinobe (festival transverse bamboo flute) workshops during the Festival. These workshops are designed for both absolute beginners and more experienced players. The workshops will cover pieces to be played with taiko, as well as traditional folksongs, etc.

Click this link for more information about the SHINOBUE workshops.

In addition to the workshop sessions, the Festival will feature a Student Concert and Gala Farewell Dinner, and a Festival Concert featuring the tutors.

The Student Concert/Gala Farewell Dinner will be held at the Japanese Cultural Center in Moilili, a short walk from the UH Music Department.

The Festival Concert is part of the SEM conference and is scheduled on 15 November. For people who cannot stay the two extra days, a full dress rehearsal of the Festival Concert will be held during the Festival proper, open only to HSF06 participants.

Each morning will begin with the "Big Blow".
