The 2nd Hawaii Shakuhachi Festival will be held at the University of Hawai'i at Manôa Music Department, Honolulu Hawai'i 9-12 November 2006. The Festival will be as rewarding as ever, we hope with more faculty and participants than ever before.

As an official event sponsored by the University of Hawai'i, HSF06 has secured accommodation at East-West Center, a short walk through the beautiful campus of the University to the Music Department. It is nearly half the cost of hotel rooms in nearby Waikiki, and doesn't require a bus ride.

Numerous music rooms at the Music Department will be made available to the Festival, including individual practice rooms for private lessons. Most workshops will be focused upon a particular piece, allowing the participant to learn to play real music, while at the same time, gaining universally applicable techniques and skills.

The Festival will cater for shakuhachi enthusiasts of all levels, from professional to total beginner.

NEW!! SHINOBUE WORKSHOPS.
Riley will be teaching four special Shinobe (festival transverse bamboo flute) workshops during the Festival. These workshops are designed for both absolute beginners and more intermediate players. The workshops will cover pieces to be played with taiko, as well as traditional folksongs etc.

Click this link for more information about the SHINOBUE workshops.

As always, a highlight of the Festival will be the Festival Concert. With HSF06, the Festival Concert will be a pre-conference event of the 51st Annual Conference of the Society for Ethnomusicology. Consequently, the Concert will be held on Wednesday 15 November 2006. For HSF05 participants who cannot stay on for the three extra nights, there will be a full rehearsal of the Concert, open only to HSF06 participants. In this closed rehearsal, you will be able to hear the entire concert in an intimate setting, and with the opportunity to discuss the programme with the performers afterwards.

SPECIAL "ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS" PACKAGE:
Once again, HSF2006 will be offering total beginners a special package. Learn to play the shakuhachi from teachers who are experienced in working with total beginners. In the five workshops especially for "Absolute Beginners", you will be taught how to make sounds, how to read shakuhachi notation and how to continue your practice once the Festival is over.

In addition to the individual instruction that you will receive in your private lesson, you will have the support of the other participants at the Festival, who will be more than happy to answer questions, provide hints and and other forms of encouragement.

Beginners can register for tuition only (five special "total beginners only"workshops, plus private lesson), and admission to the Festival Concert Closed Rehearsal for only US$100. Instrument will be available and notation provided. The workshops are for people who have never had a lesson with a qualified shakuhachi teacher. You don't need an instrument; they will be available for hire/purchase at the Festival.

Registation for people who register only for the shinobue workshops is only $100.
Download the registration form either as a pdf file or a Word file.

TUITION: US$250
This fee includes all tuition (eight to ten 90 minute workshops), a student concert at the Music Department, at least one private lesson, entry to the Festival Concert Closed Rehearsal, and admission to the Festival Masters Concert at Orvis Auditorium, UH Music Department (general admission is $10).

Please note that the Masters Concert will be part of the SEM conference. Consequently, it will held on Wednesday, November 15. The Closed Rehearsal, to be held during the Festival, will give Festival participants who may not be able to stay until Wednesday, the opportunity to hear the concert programme in an intimate setting.

SPECIAL "ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS" PACKAGE: ONLY US$100
This fee includes five workshops, one private lesson, the Student Concert and Festival Concert Closed Rehearsal, and admission to Festival Concert.
